Rachael, Pat and Robert are practicing artists with a wealth of experience, not only as art-school tutors and fine artists, but as designers, illustrators and all-round contemporary practitioners. They form part of a loose collective known as The Edgelanders and the New Arcadians – living and working in and around the edges of Brighton and Lewes, between the South Downs and the South Coast.

 

Pat Thornton is an artist and tutor, teaching for many years on Foundation courses. She was recently short-listed for the Jerwood Drawing Prize. Instagram Feed. MA Sequential Art.

Rachael Adams is an interdisciplinary artist, designer and publisher, with much experience teaching at Foundation level. Her work has been widely exhibited. MA Sequential Art, PGDip Narrative Illustration/Editorial Design, BA Fine Art (Painting)

Robert Littleford trained at the Royal College of Art and is a renowned artist, illustrator and designer. His work has appeared in publishing, advertising and magazine spreads around the world. Instagram Feed. MA Illustration

Gretchen Heffernan is an international poet & writer and runs our favourite literary publishing house: Backlash.

Dr Chris Mullen ran the hugely successful MA in Narrative Illustration/Editorial Design at the University of Brighton. He is an art historian and creator of the Visual Telling of Stories.

Dr Jac Batey was invited by the Royal Academy to represent the genre of artist’s books in one of their summer shows. She has attended conferences internationally to speak about artist’s books, zines and Damp Flat Books. She runs MA Illustration at University of Portsmouth.

Edgeland Landscapes

We looked for the magic in the marginal space beyond the residential in Woodingdean’s Happy Valley. We followed the desire paths through the hawthorns and, despite a light drizzle, drew the sturdy little bushes we sat amongst.

Pop-up Exhibition

We held a pop-up at Martyrs’ Gallery showing what we’d produced in our Early Spring ‘(Un)Still Lives’ workshops, giving us an opportunity to do a ‘show-and-tell’.
